529 college savings plans have been all over the news lately, sparking the interest of parents and grandparents all over the country. With federal tax-free earnings growth and tax-free withdrawals here to stay, it’s almost impossible to find a more effective way to save for higher education. Yet just like other investment vehicles such as your retirement plan, to maximize your savings potential you have to make the right choice when it comes to selecting your 529 plan investment options.
According to a recent survey conducted by Savingforcollege.com, we found that just over 88 percent of people who intend on opening a 529 plan do not know the steps involved with setting one up. When asked which investment options they would likely select, 47 percent said they didn’t know. Fortunately, most plans offer options suitable for both sophisticated as well as novice investors. In this latest podcast episode, Joe Hurley and I discuss the options that are typically offered, and how to choose the best 529 plan investment portfolio to achieve your savings target.
